About FID

The Fresno Irrigation District’s (FID) mission is to protect and manage the surface and groundwater resources of the District to meet the present and future needs of the people and land within the District.

FID is a leader in California water, serving over 200,000 acres of prime agricultural farmland in Fresno County while serving the San Joaquin Valley’s largest metropolitan area, Fresno and Clovis. FID delivers surface water to the cities’ respective water treatment plants and diverts flood flows which would otherwise inundate the nearly one million residents with storm water. All these operations occur within FID’s system of nearly 700 miles of canals and pipelines throughout the District.

What We Do

Fresno Irrigation District protects and manages surface and groundwater resources to provide a reliable water supply for agriculture, cities, businesses, and the environment throughout Fresno County. The District delivers water through an extensive network of canals, pipelines, and recharge facilities while helping reduce flood risk and strengthen long-term groundwater sustainability. By responsibly managing one of the region's most valuable resources, Fresno Irrigation District supports thriving communities, productive farmland, and future generations.

In an otherwise semi-arid region, FID brings life – now and into the future – by retaining its extensive water rights on the Kings River and ensuring the resiliency and sustainability of groundwater. To achieve its mission, FID imports Kings River water and some San Joaquin River water into the region and is a long-term believer in groundwater banking and recharge.
